The career research project is reality check project designed to give students the opportunity to pick a career they are interested in and find out more about that particular profession.  A career is a job that is trained for which a person intends to do for a long period, most often a lifetime.  A job is something that is done for a short period of time until one finds the profession he or she might chose for a career.  While it is true that many students may work one or more jobs during high school, it is important to begin to think about what field might become a lifelong career for them.

During the course of your stay in high school, you will have the opportunity to do career shadowing as well as participate in the career mentorship program if you so choose.  Participation in these programs is a wise thing to do because it gives you the chance to experience and even try out a number of different jobs to see if they might be something you would like to train for as a career.

The second aspect of the project is finding out what life will be like in the real world once you begin you career.  You need to factor in all aspects of life: food, clothing, shelter, transportation, insurance, health care, entertainment etc.

Below is a breakdown of the project:

Outline for Career Research Project

PART A  Components For Paper:

·         Content--Cover all aspects of one certain job in detail                        ( 30points content)

·         Specific Job

·         Skills Needed

·         Training/Education Needed

·         Job Site Description/Work Environment

·         Responsibilities/Expectations

·         Salary Range

·         Why are you interested in this job?

·         What do you expect it to be like?

·         How You Will Live?

·         Choose a place to live and describe the location.

·         Find ads in the paper or on the web for the following things:

·         House/Apartment

·         Car

·         Budgets (30 points)

·         Two spreadsheets of a 12 month budget, one based on the average salary for a minimum wage job and one based on the starting salary of your chosen profession

·         Summary of “Life Happens” situations and how you dealt with them.

·         You need a minimum of four references, two of which must be books.  One Note card for each reference

(5 points each, 20 total)

·         MLA Style Citation for source

·         Make note of pages from which you are taking information

·         Turn in printout of web information with cards. 

·         Format for paper

·         Title Slide                                                                              (2 points)

·         Minimum of ten slides not including the title slide                         (30 points total)

·         3 Points Extra credit will be given for slides over 10

·         Five of the ten slides should have at least one picture or graphic

                    (15 points total)

·         Five of the ten slides should have custom animation and sounds

                    (15 points total)

·         Each slide should have a transition of some type                            (10 points total)

·         Each slide should have some kind of background                             (5 points total)

·         The presentation should hit the highlights of the career research paper

                    (20 points total)

·         No more than 4-5 points from the research paper per slide   (-5 per slide with more)

·         Bibliography                                                                             (3 points)

·         Presentation should be a minimum of three minutes                       (5 points)
